Kishi the Vampire
Nominated for the ZKB Audience Prize 2016
Nominated for the ZKB Acknowledgement Prize 2016
In his lecture-performance, the young video artist Royce Ng tackles a highly controversial protagonist from the Japanese colonial era: Nobusuke Kishi. In the thirties, he attempted to create an «ideal state» in the Japanese colony of Manchuria enforcing fiveyear plans of the utmost severity and harshness. In 1957, despite having been convicted of war crimes, he was elected prime minister of Japan. Royce Ng narrates Kishi’s life as a vampire story, which he embeds in a manga horror video. His visually impressive interpretation of past events demonstrates how Kishi’s ghost continues to haunt the economy of modern Asia. (esc)
